LAS101: Intro to laser systems

LAS101: Intro to laser systems In-Person

Thanks for your interest in LAS101: Intro to Laser Systems!

This is the first laser cutting workshop for the University of Wyoming Engineering Student Innovation Center (EERBSIC) makerspace, and teaches you how to use the Pro Series 36x24 CO2 laser cutter to cut wood, paper, or acrylic at our state-of-the-art makerspace! You'll need to attend this course before you can use any laser cutter at the EERB SIC unsupervised. LAS101 covers laser cutting basics, applications, laser cutter anatomy and operation -- including materials and software. By the end of the 45 minute workshop, you should have a firm understanding of:

  • The inherent risks associated with laser cutting, and how to avoid them
  • General tips and tricks to operate the PS36 safely
  • What materials can be used by our PS36 laser cutter
  • Using the Retina Engrave software

Please make sure to enroll in the Makerspace Badge Training Program to ensure you receive a badge at the end of this course. You can use your badges to track what you've learned, show potential employers, and (after earning enough badges) even receive fun perks like discounted or free material use, after-hours access, and even an invitation to participate and vote as part of the Makerspace Community Subcommittee. Almost all of our equipment requires workshop training and badges before use.
