UW Libraries Exhibit Celebrates 150 Years of J. C. Penney
From now until September 30th, Coe Library is featuring a visual exhibit celebrating the 150th birthday of James Cash “J. C.” Penney, the young merchant who turned one store in Wyoming into a department store chain of 1700.
The exhibit provides historical information about Mr. Penney, his Golden Rule Philosophy of doing business, and brief histories of JCPenney stores that once lined the Main Streets of 27 Wyoming communities.
Aside from his nationwide success in retail, J. C. Penney was also a Wyoming resident, an honorary graduate of the University of Wyoming, and a real-life American cowboy.
Included in the exhibit are roughly fifty historical photographs of Mr. Penney and his Wyoming locations, as well as memorabilia from the former JCPenney store in Laramie, and UW Libraries Special Collections.
The JCPenney at 150 exhibit is free and open to the public and can be viewed on Level 3 of Coe Library, in the display cases located south of the main elevators and staircase.
